May and Jeff

(I wrote an article on May and Jeff for the Daily Pilot in September of 2008 and I've included it here.)

I smiled at the two eager faces before me, glowing with their plan for a show-stopping first dance.  May and Jeff bubbled on, each interrupting the other to explain about their wedding, upcoming trip to China, and why they were so intent on the Argentine Tango.

“Jeff’s never danced before”, May was saying with a giggle “but we just fell in love with the Tango and knew it was THE dance of romance for us”.  I explained that the Argentine Tango takes years to perfect but with their enthusiasm and lots of practice we could get down some pretty basics and ohhh and ahhh picture moves.

They went to China, came back and started work immediately; practicing in a small space at home and showing up a half hour early to review before each session.  El Basico, Ochos, Cortes, Traps, Ganchos, and Molinetes.  We added a hat for him and a rose for her.  Still more, more they said.  I laughed.  It was fun!

Next came an “A” line dip, a drag, a leg wrap and the Sentada or “little sit”.   May combed YouTubes.  Jeff fretted his head would burst from the leads and patterns stuffed into it.  Check this one, she’d email 2:50 – 2:57, and this one 0:23 - 0:40.  I was excited that they were so excited!

Session ten and it was “clean” feet and movement from figure to figure.  The music was arranged; a fanfare entrance and then “Scent Of A Woman”.  We discussed the “language” of the dance: longing, give and take, passion -- the story of courtship hundreds of years old.

Today was our last rehearsal.  iPhones were ringing off the hook and May brought two left shoes.  I misted up recording their dance, twice.  Jeff was leading fantastically and May was a vision of feminine wiles.  “Can’t wait to see the pictures”, I laughed hugging them both goodbye.  “We’ll post on YouTube”, May said and they ran out the door.

Above is an in-class video of May and Jeff's wedding dance. May was going to have a red rose in her hand at the top of the dance and use it where you see in the video her hand drawing a line down Jeff's shirt at the beginning. She was then going to put it in her lips and have Jeff "kiss it out" during the first dip and throw it to her Mom.

Not all Argentine Tango wedding dances need be as complicated as this one. This is what they wanted and I always try to get as close to the "dance of your dreams" as I can.
